Freshly felled logs and freshly sawn wood are at risk from staining organisms soon after cutting.
The stain fungi are present as spores virtually everywhere in the air, and if wood is left untreated, stain will begin to occur
within one week, or within two to three days over the warmer summer months. However, not all situations are the same.
Because of differences between treating methods, mill procedures, logistics, climate, environmental conditions and local regulations, it is unrealistic to expect one universal, all purpose antisapstain product. For freshly sawn wood, there may be a need for temporary protection from stain and mould until further processing takes place. For export logs, however, longer term protection from stain and mould is required and protection may also be needed from wood decaying organisms.
