Trial Capability in Hawke's Bay Zelam conducts trials wherever the crops are grown and Hawke's Bay provides a wide range of opportunities to test new products.
Gordon Harris, Technical Services and Development Manager and a science technician , focus on horticultural crops like apples, grapes, stonefruit, onions, and squash. Arable crops like maize are also utilised. All trials are conducted to scientific principles in existing commercial crops. This ensures the products are tested in real cropping situations. Trial sites are provided through the good will of local orchardists and farmers who can get first hand knowledge of how one product performs against another.

Apple trials have focused on powdery mildew where Neptune has been rigorously tested for any possible effects on fruit finish by way of russet assessment. More recently blackspot has been a target for product development.
